Frederik Balfour is a reporter-at-large for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek. He has been based in Asia since 1992 and has reported from more than 20 countries from East Timor to Cuba. In 2003 he was embedded with the 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. army in Iraq. Balfour received his doctorate in economics in 1991 from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as his Masters of Journalism from there in 1987. He also holds a Masters in Economics from the London School of Economics and a B.A. degree from Queen’s University in Canada. He has won several journalism awards including the Society of Asia Publishers Award and the Asia Human Rights Press Awards. His cover on Foxconn won the FOLIO: Eddie award and was finalist in the Gerald M. Loeb awards in 2011. He is a competitive open-water swimmer and hiker.
